Meet time already :) 19th August, Bristol. I haven't had chance to check out other potential venues. Last time I went to the Reckless engineer they were shutting early because it was too quiet, so I'm not sure if a small programming group would be enough for them to keep open. So I think for this meet at least, it's best to go back to the Watershed, 7pm onwards. I'll remember to bring my 'Programming Perl' book so any new people can easily find us. Hope to see everyone that came last time and it'd be good to see a few new faces ( I know there are a few of you on the list that planned to come to the previous ones and didn't make it). With a bit of luck I'll have chance to put another lighting talk together. All beginners to Perl. I managed to squeeze it into 2 days, 10-5. The idea of the course is to give people an introduction to Perl and give them the resources and knowledge they need to continue learning by themselves. All in all I think the course went smoothly and the candidates went away quite stimulated to learn more Perl, and able to see how it could help them in what they want to achieve. Following this experience I think it'll be good to have another 1 day top up and guidance course a month or so after the first course. Going trough it all has reminded me just how much there is to Perl, it's a lot to remember. I think it's best if people practice what they have learnt over the free 2 day course in their own time, rather than trying to teach more straight away. After all this is a course for absolute beginners and not programmers experienced in other languages. I know the students have now joined this list. If you'd like to introduce yourselves feel free ;) Lyle From gr-hopkins at o2.co.uk Wed Aug 13 09:44:13 2008 From: gr-hopkins at o2.co.uk (Gareth Hopkins) Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2008 09:44:13 +0100 Subject: [Bristolbathpm] First candidates have completed the B&BPM free Perlcourse References: <48A2108F.5050306@cosmicperl.com> Message-ID: <000f01c8fd20$c357a160$0501a8c0@hopkinstgfz6eq> Hi Everyone Having took the free course comming from a finance background, with basic webpage writing skills, but no real programming experience, I was interested to learn how perl works. Following the course I now want to learn more as the language is very versitile and I can see how it can be used to create many different applications. The topics the course covered gave a really good introduction to the language and it was free. As a front end web designer I have been looking at learning a scripting language, over the past couple of days I feel I have learnt alot of the basic concepts and syntax of perl. I just need to put in the practise (and I mean a hell of a lot of practise lol) and one day I may be able to write code as good as you guys. Till that day arrives I know where to come for help and advice which will be truly appreciated. Cheers, Phil >Hi All, > I'm happy to announce that we've had our first 3 candidates complete >the free Perl course. All beginners to Perl. I managed to squeeze it >into 2 days, 10-5. Unfortunately i was only available to attend the first day but considering i was the least experienced with programming and to be frank; computers in general i found his method of teaching was a great introduction to the world of programming. Considering I'm a dancer and the extension of my computer use past the Internet, is Microsoft word, I'm impressed at how he let me work at my own pace and aided me to write my first ever bit of code! Highly recommended to anyone who wants to learn complicated computer talk. Funnily enough I had a killer headache last Monday and had to go to bed early. My brother had exactly the same yesterday. I'm sure it's a funny little bug going round, as at the same time I had what seemed like a cold trying to start, that never really went anywhere... Hope you feel better tomorrow, see you at the next meet (that I WILL plan better :) ) Lyle P.S. d-construct in Brighton looks interesting, shame I'll miss it :( Think you'll be interested in the new Perl Certified hosting list we're starting (Amias' idea). What's happen(ed|ing):- A Belbin Plant/Creator debated with a Belbin Monitor/Evaluator over the possibilities and problems with a new kind of Certification. The idea of Perl Certified Hosting was discussed and led to some really good ideas. I talked about good Perl performance ideas and solutions for a change, rather than talking about mistakes I've made. Peter pointed out more advanced solutions to the performance ideas I presented :\ Laura proved that one day of our free Perl course doesn't go far to understanding the conversation that usually goes at meets, lol :) There was a brush on t-shirsts, which I'll be bringing some prices to you soon... We got to see Pete's Perl 6 t-shirt which, in fairness made our t-shirt text ideas look bad. More...
